It was freezing outside. Just a couple of weeks ago the weather had been so hot that James could have easily been sunburnt. It was always irritating how quickly and dramatically the weather could change. At least it wasn't wet and windy today - it was icy cold and water clung to the leaves on the trees and the grass on the ground. It was very unpleasant, and James couldn't help but wish for the hot weather to return.
In light of this characteristically cold weather, James was sporting a thick, patterned woolen jumper and a pair of brown dragon hide boots boots and his usual brown trousers. He liked that think that he looked fashionable in his dragon hide accessories, and was sure that other people thought that too, given his popularity. His clothes weren't really keeping him warm, and shivers were sent down his spine every now and then.
Keeping up a nice pace, he entered The Three Broomsticks after the long walk down to it. A bell jingled as he pushed the door open, and he hastily ordered a butterbeer and sat down at an empty table. It was ever so slightly warmer now that he was inside, but he was still feeling impatient and cold.
There were several other students sitting down, but he expected that the most of them were planning on heading back up to the Great Hall shortly to enjoy a hot meal surrounded by fireplaces. He was slightly envious of those people, but it was necessary for him to stay down where he was. It was almost dark, but not quite. He could see clearly out of the window, and so far there was no sign of the moon, or even any stars.
A girl that James had never seen before came and sat down next to him. He glanced at her, a little surprised at her apparent confidence. Any other day, he would have enjoyed the attention and the company, but not now. He was waiting for the Marauders, and he'd also managed to get Lily to agree to go on a date with him a couple of days before.
"You're James Potter, right?" she asked with a slight giggle, looking over at who James guessed were her group of friends. He simply nodded, taking a sip from his butterbeer. "My friend was wondering if you'd like to go to the ball with her."
She definitely had confidence to be asking him to the ball - weren't guys supposed to be the ones to ask? He already had a date, and hated rejecting people, though he'd had some experience with it in the past.
"Oh, um..." he began, but then caught sight of Sirius walking through the door. "Sorry, I have to go, my boyfriend's here." He smirked a little and walked up to Sirius, directing him out and away from The Three Broomsticks, back out into the cold air.
"What can I say, everybody loves me. Alas, my heart belongs to you," he joked, running his fingers through his hair and strolling over to a wall where he sat down. "Moony and Wormtail had better hurry up, it's bloody freezing today. The moon'll be out soon too." A full moon tonight, which meant that the four of them would be transforming in order to help out Remus, as they did every time the moon was full.

It is inappropriate to flirt with professors. Sirius finished the last of his one hundred lines, stood up, and turned his parchment in to McGonagall. She sat at her desk, eying him as a hawk might eye a mouse. It was a tad unsettling, but Sirius shook it off. Detentions with McGonagall were a regularity and he’d grown used to her cold stares after six years of endurance. The fact was, she had a soft spot for Sirius and the Marauders, loathe as she was to admit it. She liked Sirius because of his affinity for Transfiguration. He thought it had something to do with the whole Animagus fiasco, but he wasn’t about to tell her that. Sirius was not a registered Animagus, which made what he did on full moons technically illegal. As he had no desire to spend any time in Azkaban, Sirius and his friends kept their transformations secret. It was better that way, really. It made it easier to sneak in and out of the castle to help Remus.
McGonagall looked over the paper and waved him off. Immediately, Sirius took off running. He was late for the Hogsmeade trip. In fact, he had missed the Hogsmeade trip. Students were already heading back for dinner. But, Sirius was not going to be one of them. He was headed to the Three Broomsticks to meet James, Peter, and Remus, as was their tradition. They would sit down and have a round of Butterbeers before the sun set and Remus had to be in the Shrieking Shack. Sirius thought Butterbeer helped to calm his friend before the transformation. Remus’ transformations, unlike the other Marauders’, were incredibly painful. Sirius had never seen one (he respected Remus’ request that he not enter the shack until it was over), but he heard the screams as he waited. Often, he wished he could do something for his friend, but there was nothing more to be done. Remus’ parents had already tried everything. There was no cure for lycanthropy.
Panting, Sirius slowed. He realized he was not dressed for the weather in his jumper and corduroys. His combat boots splashed through the multitude of puddles on the ground and he shivered. Perhaps he should have run up to the dormitory before racing to meet his friends. If only he had bothered to grab a jacket…a scarf, at the very least. He brushed a stray hair from his eyes and shrugged. Well, he’d already come this far. It was no use whining about things that couldn’t be helped. Besides, in a few hours, his fur would keep the cold at bay. Cheered, Sirius made his way down Hogsmeade’s main street, waving to people he knew and gifting Slytherins with rude hand gestures.
Sirius stepped into the Three Broomsticks, casting his eyes around for one of his friends. He heard James before he saw him. "Sorry, I have to go, my boyfriend's here." And then there was a hand on his arm and they were back outside. Sirius simply raised an eyebrow. "What can I say, everybody loves me. Alas, my heart belongs to you," James joked, running his hand through his hair as was his tendency. Sirius and the other Marauders had done their best to break him of this annoying habit, but they had given up after fourth year. James was hopeless. "Moony and Wormtail had better hurry up, it's bloody freezing today. The moon'll be out soon too." Sirius looked up at the sky, realizing that James was right. It had taken much longer than he thought to get down to Hogsmeade. ”You’d better hope Evans wasn’t watching that little exchange. She might get jealous and I’d hate to be on the receiving end of one of her hexes.” He grinned. ”Oh, relax. They’ll be here. It’s not like Moony’s going to miss it. And Wormtail will follow him down. I would have grabbed them myself, but I thought they would be here before me.” Sirius slid down the wall to sit next to his friend. ”You missed out on quite a detention. Only one hundred lines and McGoogles was throwing longing looks in my direction the entire time. I reckon she’s waiting until I’ve graduated to agree to dinner.”

”You’d better hope Evans wasn’t watching that little exchange. She might get jealous and I’d hate to be on the receiving end of one of her hexes.”
James smiled a little at the mention of Lily. Thinking about her was usually something that made him feel happy, but since she'd agreed to go to the ball wit him, things seemed to have changed a little. Though he was very full of himself at times, he'd just about accepted the fact that Lily was never going to say yes to one of his requests. The fact that she had agreed to go with him as friends had given him a small amount of hope. Perhaps now he would be able to convince her to think of him as more than a friend, as he had done with her for so many years. He was pretty certain that the fact that he was now head boy had made her think of him in a new light. At least something good had come out of 'being boring', as Sirius would put it.
"It's alright, she already knows that you are my one true love." He smirked, looking up at the sky, wanting Remus and Peter to hurry up, since it seemed to have been so long since they'd done this together. This would be the first transformation of the school year, and one of the first meetings of all of the Marauders, since James was now occupied with head boy duties, and they all seemed to be busy a lot of the time now. Despite this, they hadn't drifted at all. The tension from last year's incident had just about faded (James found it too hard to be mad at Sirius for more than a few days anyway), and things were back to normal. That was, if things ever would be normal again now that James had changed so much. "And I don't really think that Lily is one for hexing people, so there's no need to worry."
Oh, relax. They’ll be here. It’s not like Moony’s going to miss it. And Wormtail will follow him down. I would have grabbed them myself, but I thought they would be here before me.”
James shrugged. "I guess I just want to see them. I expect Wormtail's lost his wand or something ridiculous. I wouldn't put it past him."
”You missed out on quite a detention. Only one hundred lines and McGoogles was throwing longing looks in my direction the entire time. I reckon she’s waiting until I’ve graduated to agree to dinner.”
Rolling his eyes, James chuckled. He did wonder why Padfoot hadn't arrived sooner. As usual, he was in detention with his favourite female teacher. He sincerely hoped that his flirting with her was in jest, otherwise that would be a little inappropriate and weird. James couldn't say that McGonagall was exactly the bets looking, most vivacious woman around. "Okay, Pads. I'm sure she was," he said in a sarcastic manner. "I don't think that she's interested in you, sorry to bring your hopes down. Perhaps aim for somebody more within reach? I think that Slughorn's single, though I've had my suspicions that he's got a bit of a thing for Lily... he has a shelf in his office with a picture of her on that he does more than just look at. Why is it that I dislike everything somewhat related to Slytherin?"

Immediately, Sirius regretted bringing Lily Evans into the conversation. As if James didn’t talk about her enough… She seemed to be on his mind constantly and it drove Sirius up a wall (or several). Still, he couldn’t deny the look of pure adoration that came over James’ face whenever Lily entered the room. It was clear that she made his friend happy, however unwilling she was to actually go out with him. He supposed the ball was a step in the right direction, though whether it was the right direction for Sirius and the other Marauders remained to be seen. It wasn’t to say that he was jealous, of course. Sirius Black didn’t get jealous. But, he didn’t quite like the way Lily diverted James’ Marauder time. Since first year, Sirius and James had been inseparable, but it seemed the closer he got to Lily, the further away he got from Sirius. And, though he would never voice his thoughts on the matter, Sirius worried that James would abandon him in favor of spending all of his free time with Lily.
"It's alright, she already knows that you are my one true love," James said, as if to reassure him. It was rather strange sometimes, the way Sirius and James’ minds seemed to be attuned to each other. Completely unintentionally, they had developed a way of communicating using only their body language. It was good for detentions, when dialogue was to be kept at a minimum. It was equally useful during class when they didn’t want to be overheard or caught by the professor. Sirius laughed and ran a hand through his hair. ”She’s willing to share, then? Are we going to switch off nights or what?” He raised one eyebrow in inquiry. It was a running joke between the two of them, that they were in the midst of a secret love affair. James intended to keep Sirius as a pet after school, but Sirius refused to go down without a fight. He had acquiesced to the collar, but he simply would not submit to any master. He had explained this all to James through a note passed during History of Magic.
"And I don't really think that Lily is one for hexing people, so there's no need to worry." Sirius looked up at his friend, suddenly drawn back into the conversation and away from his thoughts. He nodded, deciding it was better not to argue with James when it came to Lily Evans. "I guess I just want to see them. I expect Wormtail's lost his wand or something ridiculous. I wouldn't put it past him." Sirius smirked. Wormtail was, by far, the least organized of the Marauders. The space under the chubby boy’s bed was so messy that even the house elves wouldn’t clean it up. Many thought Sirius was disorganized, but they were all wrong. He preferred to live in organized chaos. What looked like a mess to anyone else was perfect organization to Sirius. Still, it was more likely that Wormtail was pigging out in the kitchens. He decided to voice this particular opinion. ”No, I’ll bet Moony is stuck in the kitchens, trying to pull Wormtail away from an apple tart. Don’t worry, they’ll be here.”
Yet another regular topic of discussion was Minerva McGonagall (sometimes called Minnie or McGoogles, depending on the day). Sirius was often seen in detention for flirting with his Head of House. It wasn’t that he found her attractive or anything. She was not a young woman. However, he did enjoy getting under her skin and, no matter how often he joked about it, she really was quite a fantastic woman (just not fantastic in a way that made Sirius actually want to take her out on a date). "Okay, Pads. I'm sure she was." James was being sarcastic again. Sirius rolled his eyes. Why is it that I dislike everything somewhat related to Slytherin?" Sirius brought a hand to his chin, stroking an imaginary beard for a moment. ”Slughorn’s single, you say? Hmm…” He continued to scratch his chin for another few seconds before shaking his head. ”No, Slughorn doesn’t like me very much now that I’m not technically a Black. He’s only interested in big names or top marks and I’ve got neither. Besides, I think I’ve made one too many fat jokes…” He grinned. ”I’d wager you hate everything related to Slytherin because Slytherin is a house full of pompous prats.” Sirius shrugged, as if this was the most obvious answer in the world. He cocked his head. ”What about Dumbledore? Do you think he’s too far out of my league?”

”She’s willing to share, then? Are we going to switch off nights or what?”
"Of course she's willing to share. She wouldn't have agreed to go with me if she hadn't have been. Besides, we shall see if my charms fail me once again, or if she succumbs to my beauty, and then we can discuss the logistics of it all." He chuckled, and waved at a girl that walked past calling his name. He wasn't sure who it had been since he hadn't been able to get a clear view of her face, but he though he'd be polite anyway. Hopefully it wasn't one of the girls that had been with the one that had wanted to go to the ball with him.
”No, I’ll bet Moony is stuck in the kitchens, trying to pull Wormtail away from an apple tart. Don’t worry, they’ll be here.”
James chuckled. It wouldn't be unlike Peter to be in the kitchens, especially since they'd be missing dinner for this. It was just unfortunate that the days were growing ever-shorter as Winter drew nearer, because they'd have to be getting outside earlier each time. It wasn't a problem for James, but one of them was bound to complain at some point. "I don't doubt that they'll be here, I just don't want to sit here and wait. You know I'm not patient."
James couldn't help but laugh as Sirius scratched his chin, looking as though he was genuinely considering getting with Slughorn. ”No, Slughorn doesn’t like me very much now that I’m not technically a Black. He’s only interested in big names or top marks and I’ve got neither. Besides, I think I’ve made one too many fat jokes…” That was very true about Slughorn, and it was also quite annoying. He showed a lot of favouritism, and had pretty much given up on James when he used his Potions classes as an excuse to think of more pranks or tease Snape about the fact he was such a suck-up. "He's just disappointed that you're not in his house. God knows why. Does he not realize that everybody in Slytherin turns out to be a right git? If it weren't for the fact that he's got a thing for Lily, I might actually like him. As far as liking goes with Slytherins, that is... which isn't very far."
James feigned looking at Sirius in shock. "Dumbledore?!" he exclaimed, sounding astonished before shaking his head. "Don't get too ahead of yourself, pads. He's way out of your league!" Continuing to shake his head, he looked at Sirius in such a way that said 'Oh, how naive you are to think that you have a chance with him.' "I didn't just suggest Slughorn for his good looks - he's about the only one you'd have a chance with." Glancing back up at the sky, he folded his arms, trying not to let his impatience get to his as usual.

"Of course she's willing to share. She wouldn't have agreed to go with me if she hadn't have been. Besides, we shall see if my charms fail me once again, or if she succumbs to my beauty, and then we can discuss the logistics of it all." Sirius rolled his eyes. It was just like him to assume any girl he went out with would be perfectly fine with the amount of time he devoted to his friends. Sirius had had to cut off many a relationship because of his part in the group. Girls tended to get possessive, wanting all of his free time for themselves. Sirius had broken it off with the most recent of ‘girlfriends’ when she had forced him to choose between a date with her on the night of the full moon and his obligation to Moony (whom he had already once failed). The choice for Sirius had been extremely clear and he’d told the girl to get lost on the spot. It didn’t do to let one’s sexual partners get in the way of friendship. ”Your charms have not succeeded yet. What makes you think things’ll be different at the ball? You’ll have to put on quite a good show for her… Really, mate, I wish you the best of luck impressing Evans.”
Sirius did not, by any means, want his friend to fail. Sure, he often bet against James and Lily ending up together, but he truly hoped his best friend would have a chance to be with the woman he loved. The problem with Lily Evans, Sirius found, was her ability to divert James’ attention. Sirius liked to be the very center of everyone’s universe. It was how he got his kicks. And, when James was paying more attention to Lily than he was to Sirius, things could get a bit tense (mostly because Sirius tended to get irritable about it). Even still, Sirius liked Lily. She was smart, she was pretty, and she was (despite everything she said) a good match for James. As he looked over toward his friend, Sirius could practically feel James’ excitement. As Head Boy, he didn’t get to spend as much time with the Marauders as Sirius had. "I don't doubt that they'll be here, I just don't want to sit here and wait. You know I'm not patient." Sirius nodded sagely. He, too, had trouble with impatience. He could recall many a time when the two of them managed to get into trouble as a result of their restlessness. ”So, why are we just sitting here? No one said we had to meet at exactly this spot… They could hardly fault us for wanting to pop into Zonko’s for a moment. What do you say?”
Without waiting for much of an answer, Sirius stood. Whether or not they were actually going to Zonko’s, he couldn’t stay seated for more than a few minutes at a time. Professors had suggested possible attention deficit problems, but no one in Sirius’ family had cared enough to pay attention. And, in his opinion, he was fine, so it didn’t matter. He shot James a grin when he heard the other boy’s laughter. "He's just disappointed that you're not in his house. God knows why. Does he not realize that everybody in Slytherin turns out to be a right git? If it weren't for the fact that he's got a thing for Lily, I might actually like him. As far as liking goes with Slytherins, that is... which isn't very far." Sirius shrugged, thinking of his cousin Andromeda. She was a Slytherin, but she wasn’t too bad. In fact, she was the most tolerable of his family members, aside from Uncle Alphard, of course. ”I expect he’s one of those blokes who sees what he wants to see. Besides, they’re never gits to old Sluggy. They’re too afraid to show their true colors in front of professors, much unlike us.” He laughed.
"Dumbledore?!" James looked absolutely scandalized. "Don't get too ahead of yourself, Pads. He's way out of your league!" Sirius watched him, a look of casual amusement plain in his face. "I didn't just suggest Slughorn for his good looks - he's about the only one you'd have a chance with." Sirius raised an eyebrow. ”Dumbledore’s not that far out of my league,” he mused. ”He’s the Headmaster, not Merlin himself. Although, I suspect I could get Merlin into bed if I so chose.” He smirked. ”Honestly, I don’t see why McGoogles won’t give me a chance. I’m a perfectly respectable young gentleman. You said so yourself.”
